ArchivesArchives, places where collections of original records and documents are preserved, often feature material valuable to genealogists. The largest such archives in Michigan is the State Archives of Michigan, which houses unpublished records created by state and local units of government. The archives' more than 100 million items date back to 1792. The State Archives is located in the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., two blocks west of the State Capitol, in Lansing, Michigan. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The State Archives Web site features several archival circulars that describe the Archives' holdings. Smaller archives, located at universities, colleges, museums, and historical or genealogical societies, also are available in Michigan. Several are listed on the Michigan Archival Association Web site. See Chapter 11 of Michigan Genealogy for more information. |
