Census

Census records -- particularly the later schedules -- and city directories are two sources in which you may find your ancestors in family units. Because families tended to live near relatives, you also may find your ancestor's siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins living nearby when you scan census records and directories. When you find your ancestor living in a particular location, you can then search for land and other records.

Census records in Michigan include those taken prior to statehood, state records, and federal censuses. Special census schedules were taken by both the state and federal governments.
